It’s hard to beat a good pair of jeans.

But did you know that denim production isn’t a sustainable or eco-friendly process?

Anywhere between 1500-7000 liters of water is used to create a single pair of jeans, and there is a range of toxic dyes and chemicals involved which can have a negative environmental impact.

Luckily, there are some sustainable denim brands making huge progress. Today, finding a great pair of sustainable jeans isn’t hard thanks to these brands pushing the denim industry forward.

From recycled and certified organic cotton, to water reduction programs, to re-using and upcycling old jeans, you’ll be pleased to hear all of the brands here are making their jeans with innovative sustainable processes.

The best part?

You never need to compromise on style.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the brands.

Looking for vegan jeans without the leather patch? We’ve got a guide for that here ⮕.

When we talk about sustainable denim, we’re referring tosustainable jeans, shorts, or denim jackets that are made using sustainable production processes and materials that aim to minimize the environmental impact of the denim itself.

Denim is notoriously bad for the environment, with high water usage and harmful dyes being used throughout the production stage. Luckily, brands are using innovative technology to help them create more sustainable denim by reducing water usage and energy consumption and limiting or excluding harmful chemicals in the production process.

Brands are using a combination of the following processes to reduce both the carbon and water footprint of denim:

  • Water Recycling – Some production facilities use a closed-loop water system that recycles and reuses water in the production process, reducing overall water usage.
  • Eco Dyeing Techniques – Many brands are now using more water-efficient dyeing techniques, such as ozone and laser treatments, which use significantly less water than traditional dyeing methods.
  • Drying Processes – The use of dry processes, such as dry denim finishing, eliminates the need for water in the finishing process.
  • Reduced Rinsing – Along with water recycling, denim brands are implementing methods that reduce the amount of water required for rinsing during the dyeing process.

These processes aim to minimize the environmental impact of denim production and reduce the usage of finite resources such as water.
