What Does Being Organic Mean?
You may hear the phrase ‘organic’ often used to describe everything from food products to bedding and homeware.
When we look at what it means for something to be organic, a good place to start is the definition:
“A product or production method without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.” – Oxford Dictionary
So when we break this down to understand what’s required for an organic comforter, it’s that they must be made from natural fibers grown and produced without any added chemicals or fertilizers.
What Materials Are Organic Comforters Made From?
Now we know what organic means; you may have noticed while reading the list that there’s a whole bunch of different organic materials that a cozy comforter can be made out of. But, the most popular materials on the market are organic cotton and organic wool.
Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is produced without GMO seeds or pesticides. It’s risen in popularity in recent years as more people begin to understand conventional cotton’s negative environmental effects. Organic cotton is an excellent textile for bedding because it’s naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and naturally biodegradable – making it a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional polyester-cotton blend bedding. When looking at brands that create organic cotton bedding, look out for certifications such as GOTS and the Soil Association accreditation.
Organic Wool
Organic wool is a natural fiber that’s sourced responsibly from farms that prioritize animal welfare and the environment. Farms must ensure that the sheep lead a free-range life and are reared on organic feed and grazed on organic land. In addition, farmers who rear organic animals adopt a preventative approach to disease, so animals aren’t treated with antibiotics or pesticides. Although organic wool is animal-derived, organic wool comforters aren’t suitable for vegans.
Is Bamboo Bedding Organic?
We’ve seen a lot of bamboo bedding recently, and most of it technically isn’t organic because bamboo viscose is a semi-synthetic material that requires toxic chemicals to produce. Therefore, even if the bamboo is grown without chemicals, we shouldn’t class the material as organic.
